MEDICAL ASSISTANT ACCELERATED
PATHWAY TO EMPLOYMENT TRAINING
WHAT IS MAAPET?
Building the Future of Healthcare in Southeast Wisconsin
The shortage of medical assistants (MAs) in southeast Wisconsin continues to impact the delivery of ambulatory patient care. This challenge leads to increased overtime, added strain on medical teams, and limits equitable access to health care services. To address this ongoing need, the Medical Assistant Accelerated Pathway to Employment Training (MAAPET) program provides a proven solution—and it’s now supported by the Department of Labor Nursing Expansion Grant.
About MAAPET
The MAAPET program, developed by the Center for Healthcare Careers of SE Wisconsin in partnership with Employ Milwaukee, Children’s Wisconsin, Froedtert Health, Aurora Health Care, Ascension Wisconsin, and the Medical College of Wisconsin, is designed to:
-
Be Tuition-Free: No-cost, on-the-job training.
-
Offer Immediate Wages: Participants earn while they learn.
-
Promote Diversity: Build a diverse talent pool of medical assistants.
-
Meet Workforce Needs: Train MAs to serve in ambulatory clinics across southeast Wisconsin.
Eligibility and Hiring Process
Participation in the MAAPET program requires:
-
Grant Eligibility: Candidates must qualify for the Department of Labor Nursing Expansion Grant.
-
TABE Test: Due to the accelerated nature of the program, grant eligible candidates must take and achieve a qualifying score on the TABE (Test of Adult Basic Education).
-
Employment with a Partner Healthcare System: Grant eligible, TABE qualified candidates will complete interviews and, if selected, be hired by one of the four participating systems: Children’s Wisconsin, Froedtert Health, Aurora Health, or Ascension Wisconsin.
Only those hired by one of these healthcare systems will be enrolled in the program.
Ongoing Impact with New Funding
The MAAPET program is an established initiative, now partially funded under the Department of Labor Nursing Expansion Grant. This continued support ensures the program can keep providing opportunities to economically disadvantaged individuals while strengthening the healthcare workforce and improving care delivery for communities in southeast Wisconsin.
