A medical assistant is a person who helps doctors and nurses in a doctor's office or clinic. They do many different tasks to make sure everything runs smoothly and patients are taken care of properly. Here are some things a medical assistant might do:

• Talk to Patients: They greet patients and help them fill out forms with their personal and medical information.

• Take Measurements: They might check a patient's height, weight, and vital signs like temperature, blood pressure, and pulse.

​

• Help the Doctor: They assist doctors during exams by handing them tools or helping with minor procedures.

​

• Give Injections: They might give patients shots or draw blood for tests.

​

• Office Work: They also do office tasks like answering phones, scheduling appointments, and updating patient records.

​

Medical assistants play an important role in making sure doctors and nurses can focus on caring for patients. They help keep everything organized and running smoothly in a medical office.

​Program Expectations

This program is fast-paced and requires full commitment. Attendance is mandatory, and all assignments must be completed on time to qualify for clinical placement. Missing classes or failing to complete coursework can result in disqualification from clinical training, which is essential for securing employment after graduation. Employers seek candidates who demonstrate reliability, professionalism, and a strong work ethic—qualities that start with meeting program requirements.

The H2H Medical Assistant Training Program is currently being piloted at St. Francis Intermediate School and an additional school within the Milwaukee Public School District, which will be determined soon.

This program is an accelerated, skills-based training initiative for Milwaukee County high school students. Each accepted trainee will be sponsored by one of the following healthcare systems prior to the start of the clinicals:

• Aurora Health

• Ascension

• Children's Wisconsin

• Froedtert Health

 

Program Activities: Trainees will participate in classroom, lab, and clinical activities designed to develop essential skills, including:

​

• Obtaining vitals (blood pressure, temperature, height, weight)

• Performing phlebotomy (blood draws)

• Conducting lab procedures

• Administering EKGs

• Giving injections

• Taking patient histories and charting

​

To ensure trainees are well-prepared for clinical practice, they will have the opportunity to practice techniques, such as blood draws and injections, on each other in a controlled classroom setting.

Eligibility Requirements: The program is open to:

​

• High school seniors

• Residents of Milwaukee County

• Students with prior coursework in healthcare (e.g., anatomy & physiology, medical terminology, or certified nursing assistant training) – preferred but not required

• Individuals with customer service experience – preferred but not required

• Students who will be 18 years of age or older by graduation
