Patient Transporter

Patient Transporters move patients from one place to another by either walking with the patient, or pushing the patient in a wheelchair or a patient bed.  

Career Overview

Preferred Qualifications

  • High School Diploma / GED

  • Six months or more of customer service

  • American Heart Association (AHA) Basic Life Support for Healthcare Provider (BLS) or an AHA approved equivalent is required within 90 days of hire

Job Tasks

  • Lift or assist others to lift patients on or off beds, examination tables, surgical tables, or wheelchairs. 

  • Transport patients to treatment units, testing units, operating rooms or other areas using wheelchairs, stretchers, or moveable beds. 

  • Clean & disinfect or sterilize equipment and supplies using germicides or sterilizing equipment.

  • Respond to emergency situations, such as security calls, or fire alarms.

  • Transport portable medical equipment, supplies, messages and documents between rooms or departments.

Skills and Abilities Needed to Perform Job

  • Knowledge and use of tools and equipment (wheelchairs, gait belts, canes) to assist in patient care.

  • Ability to provide excellent customer service/patient care.

  • Ability to give full attention to what others are saying and taking time to understand.

  • Ability to use abdominal and lower back muscles to support part of the body repeatedly or continuously over time without “giving out” or fatiguing.
