Pivot during the pandemic

Pivot During the Pandemic

The unprecedented demand on healthcare due to the sudden outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic brought many new challenges to an already declining workforce.  Our method for conveying information and connecting job

seekers to healthcare careers needed to quickly pivot in order to continue to feed our healthcare partners with new workers. The Center for Healthcare Careers established new and innovative ways to continue to provide healthcare career information, connections to healthcare careers, and a pathway to employment training program.

Traditional experiences PIVOT to videos, livestream events, and ZOOM interviews.

A pivot is a change in strategy without a change in vision.

Healthcare Job Connector Event Pivot

Healthcare Job Connector Events have been a staple of the Center since it's beginning. These events create a steady, diverse pipeline of candidates in search of employment in the high-growth healthcare industry. When all in-person events were halted due to covid, CHCSEW embraced newly available technology and joined forces with area community organizations

HEALTHCARE job connector

to host virtual healthcare recruiting events and provide information about healthcare careers to interested job seekers. Our website was redesigned and updated to include an application portal and self scheduling option for online interviews.

Paper Brochures move to virtual

During the pandemic the use of paper brochures was no longer a safe or effective way to share information with schools or others who were interested in pursuing a career in healthcare. The Center for Healthcare Careers created an innovative solution to ensure healthcare career information could continue to be distributed to those who needed it. Our animated virtual

brochures series includes 9 essential healthcare careers from our career pathway. These brochures have been viewed over one thousand times!

Job Shadows move to "See Yourself in Healthcare" videos and

"Meet the Healthcare Professional" interview events.

Due to covid protocols it was determined unsafe to allow students to participate in in-person job shadows. The Center for Healthcare Careers, applied for and received a grant made possible by SAMHSA of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) as a part of a financial

assistance award to the Milwaukee County Behavioral Health Division totaling $3,985,445 with 100 percent funded by SAMHSA/HHA in order to create "See Yourself in Healthcare" videos. These videos allow individuals interested in pursuing a career in healthcare, the opportunity to learn about careers from professionals working in healthcare roles. The "See Yourself in Healthcare" videos have received nearly 13 thousand views since their creation in 2021!  With the help

of our hospital partners we also created a LIVE interview event series call "Meet the Healthcare Professional".  Schools and others interested in healthcare careers have been able to actively participate in discussions with professionals working in various healthcare careers.

A Model that Meets the Challenges
The Center follows three core tenets to create a purposeful partnership model.

Collaboration - Unite and align partners to drive collaborative solutions with a focus on workforce development efforts.

Creation of new website - In 2020 our website was rebuilt to provide easier access to healthcare career information. It now serves as a portal for job seekers to find reliable up to date information, and allows people to learn about and apply for the Medical Assistant Accelerated Pathway to Employment Training (MAAPET) program. The new in-house website offers us the ability to adapt to the changing needs the community we serve.

MEDICAL ASSISTANT ACCELERATED PATHWAY TO EMPLOYMENT

maapet logo

A documented shortage of medical assistants (MAs) has had significant impact on the delivery of ambulatory patient care services for individuals, and creates substantial levels of overtime and a work burden on other members of the medical team. To meet this critical health care workforce need, support an economically disadvantaged workforce, and significantly improve the equitable delivery of health care services across impacted communities in southeast Wisconsin, a new approach is needed.

The Center for Healthcare Careers of SE Wisconsin along with, Employ Milwaukee, Children's Wisconsin, Froedtert Health, Advocate Aurora, Ascension and the Medical College of Wisconsin have developed, piloted, and are evaluating an accelerated training program (MAAPET - Medical Assistant Accelerated Pathway to Employment Training) that provides immediate engagement to wages and on-the-job training to increase a diverse talent pool of medical assistants working

in ambulatory clinics across southeast Wisconsin. This opportunity is made possible in part by the Advancing a Healthier Wisconsin Endowment.
